In order to be able to offer appropriate speeds to even the most bandwidth-hungry applications in the future, we are gradually carrying out hardware upgrades to the network in the data center. In the very near future, it will be possible to connect servers to the network at 100 gigabits per second, which can forward this data at up to 400 gigabits per second.

The data center network follows a spine-leaf architecture; in the first step, we want to make the spine switches 400G-capable so that in the next step we can put new leaf switches with 100G connections for servers and 400G connections to the spine switches into operation.

After the spine upgrade in the primary data center on Monday, March 10, 2025, the two spine switches in the backup data center on the Gußhaus campus will be replaced on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. While one spine is being swapped, the leaves use the connection to the other spine; this should prevent any noticeable outages in the data center network.

Finally, on Monday, March 17, 2025, we will be expanding the data center to include the BFU2 location on the Getreidemarkt campus.
