New: IPv6 in the TUvpn service

Occasional problems with L2TP/IPsec

IPv6 with AnyConnect
On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, our TUvpn service was extended by IPv6 functionalities. This means that TU Wien servers that offer services
via IPv6 can now be reached directly via VPN tunnel in TUnet. Fixed IPv6 addresses are not yet assigned, but the implementation is already underway. We will inform you as soon as this is completed. If problems with firewall activations are observed, a helpful workaround could be to temporarily deactivate the IPv6 stack on the client. In the course of the IPv6 adaptation, new versions of the Cisco Secure Client have also been rolled out. As before, these will be installed automatically on your client.

Occasional problems with L2TP/IPsec
Some users have been experiencing connection problems with L2TP/IPsec since the changeover; no VPN connections can be established. This does not occur for all users, the causes have not yet been clearly identified and work is underway to solve the problem. There is no general fault with the TUvpn service, there are always active connections on the server.
Our explicit recommendation is to switch to the Cisco Secure Client (AnyConnect) as soon as possible and to use it permanently. AnyConnect guarantees modern and state-of-the-art secure VPN including automatic reconnection in the event of network changes or brief interruptions (e.g. switching between WiFi and mobile broadband). Once installed, the client is updated fully automatically when new versions with closed security gaps are available. You do not need to take any action here, this happens automatically when the connection to the server is established. This means that your system is always up to date with the latest VPN security standard.

How do I install the Cisco Secure Client (AnyConnect)?
The automated installation is carried out via https://vpn.tuwien.ac.at, opens an external URL in a new window (validation with a valid TUvpn account!).
The operating system is automatically recognized and you are guided through the installation process. The Cisco Secure Client is then installed on your end device and can be accessed via the menu. Available for the following platforms: Windows (32-bit and 64-bit), Linux, Mac OS X. For Apple IOS and Android, the respective stores offer the “Cisco Secure Client”.
If you have problems with the installation, see TUvpn instructions at https://colab.tuwien.ac.at/display/SVCSP/TUvpn+Anleitungen, opens an external URL in a new window or contact help@it.tuwien.ac.at.
